Maasvlakte 2 and the port of Rotterdam

The Maasvlakte is a large industrial area located in the North Sea. The Maasvlakte is part of the port of Rotterdam, and is the economic engine driving the city. Approximately 60,000 people are direct employees here, and it employs as many as 250,000 people indirectly. The port of Rotterdam is far and away Europe’s largest port, and the third largest port in the world. Between 1962 and 2004, the port of Rotterdam even held the title of the world’s largest port.

The Maasvlakte was built in the 1960s. In the years to come, the port will be expanded by the addition of the Second Maasvlakte, also known as Maasvlakte 2. Construction on this 2000-hectare project officially started on 1 September 2008. The construction of the Second Maasvlakte is expected to be completed in 2013. Due to the 20% expansion of the current port to 6000 hectares, the capacity for container transfers will triple.

The port of Rotterdam is not only extremely important economically, but also for the city itself. It is also a major tourist attraction. Many tourists come to see the port, and 375,000 people take a tour on the Spido boats every year. Other often-visited sightseeing locations include the Euromast and the bridges of Rotterdam, such as the Erasmusbrug and the Willemsbrug.
